IDES, LODs, MEB, PEB, PDA – What Do These Department of Defense Acronyms Mean to an Injured Veteran’s Retirement Pay and Benefits?
Presented By: Thomas Roughneen, Esq., Citizen Soldier Law
Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. ET
In this webinar, Thomas Roughneen will share his experiences as a practitioner, Physical Evaluation Board (PEB) adjudicator, and Warrior in Transition in the Integrated Disability Evaluation System (IDES). He will describe the process of transitioning from active duty and how it relates to your veteran clients, particularly those still serving in the Reserve Component and 54 National Guards. Practitioners who fail to familiarize themselves with these important and financially significant questions jeopardize a Department of Defense disability pension and Tricare healthcare benefits for disabled veterans and their families.
Thomas Roughneen is in his 30th year of military service and has been an Army Judge Advocate, both full- and part-time in Trial Defense Services, since 2004. He opened his own law practice in 2014 to serve the unique interests of military members and veterans. His practice focuses on criminal defense, disability litigation, misconduct matters, and reemployment cases.
Mr. Roughneen enlisted in 1988 and attended Army Basic Training as a Private in the New Jersey Army National Guard. He received his commission as a Second Lieutenant in 1990 from Rutgers University. Following other assignments in the field artillery, he led a team of soldiers conducting civil-military operations in Kirkuk and the Sunni Triangle in Iraq in 2003 and 2004. He later served as defense counsel to Salim Hamdan, a Guantanamo Bay detainee, before mobilizing again as a military prosecutor at Fort Dix, followed by a tour as a Brigade Judge Advocate in Germany between 2009 to 2012. His last active duty mobilization was as a PEB adjudicator, where he reviewed Army Soldiers’ claims for disability retirement. He earned a Meritorious Service Medal for his service as a Judge Advocate in Germany in 2011 and two Bronze Star Medals during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Mr. Roughneen also served as a Union and Essex County Assistant Prosecutor for a total of nine years and was a law clerk in the New Jersey Superior Court. He is a New Jersey Supreme Court Certified Criminal Trial Attorney.
